Turning with Seamus Cassidy

The Down Chapter invited Seamus Cassidy to give a demonstration and hold a workshop for it’s members.

Seamus showed us how to make one of his “art” pieces which included steam bending and Burr turning.

This was a great weekend enjoyed by all and concluded with our annual dinner at the Burrendale Hotel.

The next generation of turners

Assisted Tony Rea at one of his highly recommended “Introduction to Woodturning” courses. Six people with no or very little experience of woodturning attended a day long session. Everyone had the opportunity to turn a bowl from start to finish  from an Ash blank. All in attendance had a great day and had a completed bowl to take home.

When things go wrong

I was working on this 15″ oak platter and was just tidying up the base when a moment’s lack of concentration caused the platter to fly off the lathe, hit the lathe bed and break in two. I was so annoyed I couldn’t even swear :- (

Great Night at the Chapter Meeting

Last night was our monthly meeting and was one of our “Hands On” nights, these are nights when we get several lathes out and encourage everyone to have a go at turning something, big or small.

Last night was a bit different in that we spent a lot of the night planning our entry for the Guild “Chapter Challenge” which this year is a Traction engine.

Won’t give too much away here, don’t want all those other chapters copying us :-)

East Central Chapter Seminar

Spent a great morning on Saturday at the East Central Chapter Seminar, demonstrators were Tony Rea & John Malone,

Unfortunately we were unable to stay for John’s demo but we had a very informative demo from Tony on how to turn and finish a natural edges bowl.

A full report will appear on our website and you can also check out the regular meeting reports of the East Central Chapter here,
